NREN launched in April 2025 with a mission to bring practical, community-centered energy efficiency resources to rural Northern California. In our first year, we expanded programming across 17 counties, built strong local partnerships, and delivered real energy-saving solutions for residents. This Year in Review highlights what we accomplished together in 2025 and what’s ahead as we grow in 2026.
Our First Year of Impact in Northern California
In April 2025, the Northern Rural Energy Network (NREN) officially launched with a clear goal: to bring practical, community-centered energy efficiency resources to rural Northern California. Nearly a year later, we’re proud to reflect on what we’ve built together and the impact we’ve already made across the region.
Since launching, NREN has begun offering energy efficiency programming in 17 counties across Northern California, including: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, El Dorado, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mariposa, Mendocino, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Sutter, Tuolumne, and Yuba. Throughout 2025, our work focused on meeting people where they are by connecting residents with energy-saving tools, rebates, and guidance that make homes more comfortable, efficient, and affordable.
Here’s what we accomplished in 2025
This first year has been about building strong foundations: establishing trusted partnerships, engaging directly with communities, and delivering real, tangible energy-saving solutions. None of this would have been possible without the residents, local organizations, and partners who helped shape NREN from the very beginning.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As we move into our second year, we’re excited to expand NREN’s reach and impact. In 2026, we plan to launch several new services, including energy efficiency programs for local public agencies and businesses, as well as a workforce development training program to support the next generation of energy professionals in our region.

Discounts on energy bills for qualified households
California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE):
Low-income customers that are enrolled in the CARE program receive a 30-35 percent discount on their electric bill and a 20 percent discount on their natural gas bill.
